Are Foam Core Pickleball Paddles USA Pickleball Approved?

Are Foam Core Pickleball Paddles USA Pickleball Approved?

Yes: a foam-core pickleball paddle can be USA Pickleball approved. EPP, EVA and other foam constructions are not automatically legal or illegal. Approval belongs to the exact finished paddle model, not to a material label.

Why foam caused questions

Compressible materials can contribute to a trampoline-like response, so equipment standards have to control excessive rebound. That does not require a blanket ban on foam. USA Pickleball evaluates the finished paddle against its equipment requirements, and the official approved list includes models recorded with EPP foam and other foam constructions.

What PBCoR means

PBCoR means Paddle/Ball Coefficient of Restitution. It is a standardised measure of rebound in the paddle-ball interaction. The USA Pickleball Equipment Standards Manual states a not-to-exceed limit of 0.43 effective 1 November 2025. It is a compliance threshold, not a score every paddle should aim to reach.

PBCoR does not tell you everything about a paddle. It does not fully describe spin, swingweight, twistweight, vibration, feel, control or the way a paddle behaves outside its centre. It is one important part of a wider equipment assessment.

How to check a paddle correctly

  1. Search the official USA Pickleball Approved Paddle List by brand and model.
  2. Check the current status for that exact model—not just a similar family name.
  3. Do not assume approval transfers after a meaningful core, face, thickness or construction change.
  4. For a sanctioned event, also read the organiser’s current rules.

“Designed to comply” is not the same as approved

Terms such as “tournament specification” or “PBCoR-ready” do not replace an exact current listing. The approved list changes as testing and model status change, so it is the only sensible final check before tournament use.

The practical takeaway

Foam is an engineering option, not an automatic compliance result. A thoughtfully designed EPP, EVA or hybrid foam paddle can pass; another paddle with a different construction may not. Check the model, not the marketing category.
